Streaming Digital Audio for Vintage Stereo Systems

People often ask if it's possible to enjoy digital audio on a vintage sound system. Indeed it is! Many have used CD players for years with a classic on Pioneer or Marantz. So, what about streaming?

Bluetooth Streaming

Bluetooth is the oldest and least expensive method for streaming audio. Adapters can be had for as little as $25. Even though quality has improved, it's still below the quality of a Compact Disc. In addition, phone calls interrupt music, and the phone must not move too far away.

Airplay and Casting

Airplay is Apple's technology for streaming via Wifi. Android devices have a similar "cast" function. Wifi capable streamers are a little more expensive, but offer better quality sound, and while you use a phone or tablet to control them, once the music plays the phone can leave, turn off, etc. With a quality streaming device, you can play music at CD quality or "lossless". Depending on the device and music service, you can even play music at a higher resolution than possible with Compact Disc.

The device pictured is the Cambridge AXN-10, and sells for $499. It supports lossless audio up to 768KHZ and 32bit PCM.
